Chapter 6
Block Patterns
Korean syllables can be arranged left-to-right or top-to-bottom depending on the vowel shape. Understanding these patterns makes reading much easier.
Two main layouts
| Vowel shape | Layout | Example | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vertical vowels | to the right | 가, 너, 디 | |
| Horizontal vowels | below | 고, 두, 르 |
Why 가/고/구/화 look different
Same consonant + different vowel shape = different block layout. It’s still the same building rule.
| Build | Result | Note | |
|---|---|---|---|
| ㄱ + ㅏ | 가 | vowel to the right | |
| ㄱ + ㅗ | 고 | vowel below | |
| ㅎ + ㅘ | 화 | combined vowel still follows shape |
